A Beacon of Compassion in the Kinta Valley

Yayasan Teratai serves as a pillar of community support in Ipoh, established in 2001 by a group of successful professionals who shared a collective vision of giving back to society. Incorporated as a non-profit organization, the foundation was born from the initiative of Dr. Nawawi bin Mat Awin, Choe Kok Choon, and Dato’ Yap Lim Sen, who believed that compassion must be matched with tangible action.

Guided by the enduring philosophy that “we make a life by what we give,” Yayasan Teratai dedicates its resources to bridging social gaps, specifically focusing on the critical areas of healthcare and education to support the most vulnerable members of the Perak community.

A significant portion of the foundation’s efforts is directed toward ensuring dignity and well-being for the elderly. Recognizing the growing need for professional geriatric support as life expectancy increases, the foundation established the Yayasan Teratai Aged Care Centre in 2012. Located in a peaceful environment in Ipoh, this centre operates on the concept of a “Home Away From Home,” offering residential, day, and respite care.

The facility prioritizes the physical and emotional health of its residents by employing retired nurses trained in geriatric care and providing nutritious, home-cooked meals prepared fresh daily. Through engaging social activities and rehabilitation programs, the centre strives to ensure that seniors enjoy their golden years with the comfort, safety, and respect they deserve.

Beyond healthcare, Yayasan Teratai operates on the belief that education is the ultimate game-changer for breaking the cycle of poverty. The foundation is committed to ensuring that financial hardship never stands in the way of a child’s academic potential. Working closely with over 35 schools across Perak, the foundation identifies deserving students to provide them with essential financial assistance, study loans, and grants at the start of each school term.

This support extends to holistic development initiatives, such as sponsoring English enrichment classes in rural schools to enhance communication skills and future employability. Whether helping a primary student purchase books or assisting a university undergraduate with tuition, the goal is to empower the next generation to succeed.

The impact of Yayasan Teratai is measured not just in goodwill, but in substantial contribution. Over the past two decades, the foundation has disbursed more than RM12 million to support worthy causes, distributing in excess of RM700,000 annually to sustain its own programs and aid partner organizations.

This extensive reach spans across haemodialysis centers, orphanages, soup kitchens, and palliative care units, touching the lives of the disabled, the underprivileged, and the sick. By collaborating with various NGOs and welfare homes throughout the state, Yayasan Teratai ensures that every contribution makes a tangible, lasting difference, continuing its legacy of building a more compassionate society for all.
